Rashtriya Military Schools

Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) are elite residential institutions established under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, to impart quality education and military-style training to young students. Originally established as King George’s Royal Indian Military Schools in 1925 to educate the sons of defence personnel, these Category ‘A’ institutions have evolved into world-class training grounds for future military leaders and civilian high-achievers alike.

Directly functioning under the Directorate General of Military Training (MT-15), Ministry of Defence, RMS institutions focus on all-round character building, academic excellence, physical conditioning, and leadership. Admissions are open to both boys and girls, with primary reservation provided to wards of serving and retired defence personnel alongside a fixed quota for civilian candidates.

Basis of admission

Admission to Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) is strictly merit-based and governed by a transparent, multi-stage selection process conducted under the direction of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.

The final selection of candidates is determined by the following key factors:

  • Common Entrance Test (CET): Candidates must qualify in the OMR-based written entrance examination. To be eligible for the next stage, candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks in each paper (including qualifying in the compulsory English paper).

  • Interview (Viva-Voce): Shortlisted candidates based on written test merit are called for a personal interview at designated RMS centers to assess personality, confidence, communication skills, and general awareness.

  • Medical Fitness: Candidates shortlisted after the interview must undergo a rigorous medical examination conducted by a Military Hospital/Board and be declared physically and medically fit for military-oriented residential schooling.

  • Category and Reservation Policies: Final seat allocation strictly adheres to category-wise quotas prescribed by the Ministry of Defence (70% for wards of Serving/Ex-Servicemen JCOs/ORs, 15% for wards of Officers, and 15% for Civilians, with applicable sub-reservations for SC/ST and Defence martyrs’ wards).

  • Final Combined Merit List: Final admission offers are made strictly on the basis of combined merit (Performance in Written Exam + Interview), subject to medical fitness, category vacancy, and school preference.

  • Verification of Documents: Final enrolment is granted only after successful verification of original birth certificates, service/discharge records, category documents, and school marksheets.

** Selection is conducted on an objective, merit-cum-category basis, ensuring complete fairness and transparency for every eligible candidate across the country.
